South LA From My POV
South LA is an area with deep roots and a strong identity, and I’ve always felt it’s one of the most misunderstood parts of the city by buyers who haven’t spent real time here. Neighborhoods like Leimert Park, Inglewood, Baldwin Hills, and View Park have their own character—rich cultural histories, strong community institutions, and a local pride that’s palpable. I’ve watched this area evolve significantly over the past decade, with new investment and infrastructure while still holding onto what makes it distinctly South LA.
What I Love About South LA
Leimert Park is one of the great cultural hubs of Black Los Angeles—live jazz, independent galleries, community gathering spaces, and a creative spirit that has been there for generations. The View Park and Windsor Hills area has some stunning mid-century architecture on beautiful tree-lined streets and hill lots with views to match. Inglewood’s transformation around SoFi Stadium has been remarkable. And across South LA, the value proposition for buyers—relative to other parts of the city—remains genuinely compelling.
Life in South LA
Life in South LA is community-oriented in a way that’s rare in a city that can feel disconnected. Long-term residents know their neighbors. There are strong churches, community organizations, and local institutions that have been anchors for decades. Access to the 405, 110, and 10 freeways makes the broader city very reachable. The ongoing development around Inglewood—the stadium, improved transit, new retail—has put South LA on a lot more people’s radar. For buyers who are looking for value, community, and an area with genuine momentum, South LA deserves a real look.

After 20 years of living and selling homes in LA, I’ve built a pretty solid rotation of go-to spots in West LA. These are the places I actually send clients to—and where you’ll probably run into me when I’m not showing houses.
Hot and Cool Cafe
A Black-owned socially conscious coffeehouse in Leimert Park with organic coffee, plant-based bites, and a wall full of art. They host open mics, jazz nights, and community events. Not just a coffee shop—a community institution.
Sip & Sonder
A Black woman-owned cafe in Inglewood that’s been part of the neighborhood since 2017. Great coffee, warm energy, and a meaningful story behind it. One of the places I always take clients through when touring this area.
Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen
Born in View Park, with a second location in Inglewood connected to Issa Rae. Their Soul Bowl has its own fan base. An all-day menu that’s creative and community-focused. The Inglewood location puts it right in the middle of the city’s new energy.
Harun
A cultural hub and coffeehouse in Leimert Park serving great drinks alongside sandwiches, smoothies, and a thoughtfully curated retail section. It’s part of the new Leimert Park story without erasing the old one.
Dulan’s Soul Food
A revered Inglewood institution known for pork chops, fried chicken, and mac and cheese that people drive across the city for. One of the best soul food spots in Los Angeles. I’ve been going for years.
Ackee Bamboo
A Leimert Park staple for bold Caribbean flavors: jerk chicken, curry goat, Jamaican patties. Hearty, delicious, and deeply rooted in the community. The kind of place that’s been feeding the neighborhood for a long time and earned its loyalty.
